The Community Service and Volunteer Work Committee at Prince Hussein bin Abdullah II College of Political Science and International Studies organized a voluntary field visit on Friday, June 20, 2025, to Al-Rahma Animal Welfare Association. The visit aimed to strengthen environmental awareness and promote the goals of sustainable development. The initiative was led by Dr. Rand Irshaidat, organized and supervised by Dr. Lubna Bayouq, and joined by a group of students from the college and committee members.
This noble initiative formed part of a series of activities designed to instill environmental citizenship and compassion for animals. It also aligned with the fifteenth Sustainable Development Goal, “Life on Land,” which focuses on protecting ecosystems, preserving biodiversity, and treating animals with care as an essential part of the environmental balance.
The visit began with an introductory session where association members, Alaa Jarrar, Jumana Tajaqa, and Raafat Jabara, gave a detailed presentation on the association’s journey since its establishment in January 2018. The association works to rescue stray and abused dogs, provide them with necessary care, and secure a safe environment on a designated farm. The representatives explained that the farm has sheltered and cared for more than 300 dogs, while many others still wait for adoption locally or internationally. They also highlighted the financial challenges the association faces, relying mainly on individual donations.
The students showed deep interest in the discussion, which shed light on the daily challenges the association confronts, especially the lack of support and the difficulty of convincing the local community of the importance of protecting stray animals and treating them ethically and humanely.
Afterward, the students toured the shelter’s facilities, including isolation and veterinary care rooms, feeding and cleaning procedures, and safe, humane ways of handling the dogs. During the tour, Ms. Alaa Jarrar led an awareness workshop that stressed the importance of spreading a culture of animal welfare in society and recognizing the role these creatures play in maintaining ecological balance.
The visit enriched the students’ experience and gave them the chance to engage with real-life issues related to volunteer work and social responsibility. It strengthened their environmental and humanitarian awareness and equipped them with practical skills in organizing field activities and collaborating with civil society institutions.
The committee extends its sincere thanks and appreciation to Al-Rahma Animal Welfare Association for their warm reception, excellent organization, and the great humanitarian efforts they devote to spreading compassion and kindness. Special thanks also go to the participating students for their dedication and spirit in making this initiative a success
